9 Things to Know About Jeuveau, BOTOX’s Latest Competitor

The injectables market just keeps on growing! Earlier this year, the FDA approved a new Botox alternative, Jeuveau™. The first injectable neurotoxin to receive approval in nearly a decade, Jeuveau joins Dysport, Xeomin, and of course, Botox, as the fourth product for treating frown lines and other expression lines such as crow’s feet and brow furrows.

I’m excited to offer Jeuveau at my practice here in Richmond, and my patients are happy to know they have another option to treat unwanted signs of aging. Because it’s so new, many people are wondering what Jeuveau is and how it fits into the cosmetic medicine field. Here are a few basics that will help you get to know Jeuveau.

Jeuveau essentially works the same way as Botox (and the others)

Like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, Jeuveau is an injectable medication made from botulinum toxin type A, which is injected directly into the specific facial muscles responsible for forming expression lines. The medication works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to these muscles, helping them relax and in turn helping smooth lines out.

Intro to Jeuveau with Dr. Aboutanos

Jeuveau’s formula is slightly different

All of the injectable neurotoxins on the market have minor differences in their formulas. With Jeuveau, the main distinguishing factor is its purification process. The manufacturer uses a proprietary “Hi Pure” technology to ensure quality and vacuum-dries the product instead of freeze-drying it, which is thought to result in a more potent product.

Jeuveau’s name is inspired by the French word nouveau

The manufacturer of Jeuveau, Evolus, wanted to communicate the idea that their product is made using the latest technology and therefore looked to the word nouveau, which is French for “new” or “modern,” for name inspiration. Essentially, it combines the concept of rejuvenation with newness.

You’ll also see it called “NEWTOX”

Because Jeuveau is a little hard to say (not to mention spell), it’s been dubbed “NEWTOX.” You’ll see this in social hashtags as well as beauty industry media. So, if you see an article about NEWTOX, they’re likely talking about Jeuveau.

Jeuveau is currently only FDA approved to treat glabellar lines

Unlike Botox, which started as a medication for ocular strabismus (eye muscle spasms) and has nine other therapeutic uses, Jeuveau is specifically formulated for cosmetic use. It is FDA approved for glabellar lines (frown lines) but can also be used off-label for crow’s feet, brow furrows, and other expression lines by a trained provider.

Results are noticeable within days, and last about 4 months on average

Another similarity with Botox! On average, patients experience full results about one week after treatment, and the wrinkle-reducing effects of Jeaveau last between 3 and 4 months. As with any treatment, results vary from patient to patient.

Jeuveau and Botox cost about the same, all else being equal

Pricing is very similar between the products for doctors, and for any given patient the cost per treatment, per area with Botox and Jeuveau will be very similar. Both products’ manufacturers offer special promotions from time to time, as do I here at my Richmond plastic surgery practice!

If you’re curious about Jeuveau, it’s worth a try!

The truth is there are more similarities between Jeaveau, Botox, and the other neurotoxins than there are differences. If you’re happy with your current injectable, there is no need to switch. However, there is a chance that you will like your results a little better with Jeuveau, just as some patients like their results with Dysport or Botox better.

Choose a qualified Richmond Jeuveau provider

Jeuveau may be new, but there’s still no substitute for provider skill when it comes to safe injections and beautiful, natural-looking results. I continue to perform neurotoxin and filler injections personally, as I believe every patient deserves to benefit from a plastic surgeon’s training, surgical precision, and understanding of facial anatomy and proportion. If you are considering Jeuveau (or Botox!) in Richmond, I invite you to contact me for a personal consultation. I look forward to meeting you!
