DAXXIFY

Are fine lines and wrinkles aging your appearance? While Botox has been the go-to for many years, the cosmetic industry is constantly evolving, and one of the latest innovations in injectable neurotoxins is DAXXIFY®. Learn more about Daxxify in Richmond with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sharline Aboutanos.

What is Daxxify?

Daxxify, or “Daxi,” is the latest neuromodulating injectable to soften and smooth expression-based lines and wrinkles. This Botox-type injectable is touted for its superior longevity and has the same active ingredient as other neurotoxins on the market.

How does Daxxify work?

Daxxify works by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the targeted area. The active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, blocks signals from nerves to muscles and prevents muscle contractions caused by your facial expressions. Relaxing these muscles softens or eliminates fine lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions to reveal a smoother, more youthful-looking complexion.

How is Daxxify different from Botox and other neuromodulators?

When precisely administered by an expert injector, all FDA-approved neuromodulators can produce stunning, natural-looking results; however, the main distinguishing factor for Daxxify compared to the other alternatives is how long Daxxify’s results last. Daxxify's wrinkle-reducing effects persisted for over 6 months in more than half of the patients and up to 9 months for participants in clinical trials. This longevity allows Daxxify users to have fewer touch-up treatments without compromising their aesthetic results.

Daxxify's longer-lasting effects are attributed to its unique formulation. The muscle-relaxing toxin is bound to a novel protein using proprietary Peptide Exchange Technology™, so the product takes longer to wear off. Daxxify uses an innovative peptide as a stabilizer instead of human or animal byproducts—an attractive option for those who seek a “clean” Botox-type injectable.

Where can Daxxify be injected?

Daxxify is FDA-approved to treat frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) and is also used in other “off-label” areas, just like Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®, for a naturally refreshed appearance, including:

  • Crow’s feet

  • Forehead lines

Daxi is often ideal for lifting sagging brows, smoothing out dimpled chins, and achieving a “lip lift” effect.

Another area where Daxi injections are becoming increasingly popular is in the neck region—injecting small amounts into specific muscles in the neck helps reduce visible bands (platysmal bands) that become more prominent with age.

Daxi also has medical uses similar to its competitors and can also be used to treat migraines and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the underarms or palms.

What happens during Daxxify treatments?

Dr. Aboutanos will assess your unique facial structure during your consultation and discuss your desired improvements. She will also review your medical history to ensure you can safely achieve optimal results with Daxxify.

Dr. Aboutanos will have you make facial expressions, such as frowning and squinting, to identify injection sites with your treatment goals in mind. This step is essential to achieving personalized results as your animated expressions are part of your personality and, thus, should be treated with the utmost care and precision to preserve your natural look while delivering the aesthetic results you are looking for.

We then cleanse your treatment area(s) and carefully inject Daxxify under your skin using a very fine needle. After the injections, we’ll apply a cold compress to help reduce any potential swelling, bruising, and discomfort.

When will I see results?

Many patients see fewer lines and wrinkles within a few days to a week after treatment, but it can take up to two weeks to experience the full wrinkle-reducing effects. This is very similar to other brands of neuromodulators.

How long does Daxxify last?

Daxxify results typically last for about 6 months and have been shown to last up to nine months for some patients—a significant improvement over other neuromodulators, which only last for 3-4 months.

Age, skin type, and lifestyle choices may impact how long your Daxxify results last. Your results will also be influenced by the number of units administered and the treated area (s). In general, more units are needed to treat areas with more muscle mass, such as the jawline or neck, so these areas may require more frequent treatments to maintain the same level of improvement seen in smaller areas.

What are the side effects?

Daxxify has a similar safety profile to other Botox-type injectables and is considered safe and well-tolerated. Mild, temporary side effects include:

  • Redness

  • Swelling

  • Bruising

  • Pain at the injection site

These reactions usually resolve within a few days to a week and can be minimized by using proper injection techniques and avoiding blood-thinning medications before your treatment.

Less frequent side effects of Daxxify reported in clinical trials include headache, blurred vision, drooping eyelids or eyebrows (ptosis), asymmetry of facial expressions or features, and difficulty swallowing or speaking.

These rare adverse effects are usually mild to moderate in severity and typically resolve in the same amount of time as other formulas.

Should I switch to Daxxify?

Switching to Daxxify would likely be a good option if you want to maintain your current treatment plan with fewer touch-up appointments. If you’re currently receiving treatments with Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Jeuveau, Dr. Aboutanos would be happy to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of switching at your next appointment.

Who should not get Daxxify?

You should not receive Daxxify injections if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Daxxify

  • Have certain neuromuscular conditions

  • Have an active skin infection
