4 Ways to Make the Most of the Last of Summer in Richmond

Summer is quickly winding down—and even if you’re dreaming of cooler weather and pumpkin spice, it’s sad to see the long, warm days go. Luckily, it’s not too late to make a few more great family memories and send off the season with a bang. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite things to do in Richmond that embody summer fun.

1. Spend the day splashing around at Swift Creek Lake

Swimming is the quintessential summer activity—and in August, a fun way to cool off is a necessity. Lucky for us living in RVA, you don’t have to go far to find water! One of our favorite spots to spend a day is Swift Creek Lake in Pocahontas State Park.

Whether you want to float, swim, boat, or fish, there’s no shortage of fun to be had at the lake. Rent kayaks or a paddleboat to tool around the lake and take in the scenery. When you need a break, enjoy lunch in one of the many picnic areas located in the park.

2. Check out summer events at the botanical gardens before you miss your chance

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden makes for a wonderful outing regardless of the season, but there are some extra special exhibits and events that won’t be around for much longer. Now through the beginning of October, you and your family can get up close and personal with hundreds of tropical butterflies in the M&T Bank Butterflies LIVE! exhibit. You’ll get to experience the magic of having numerous winged beauties flitter around you while learning all about them and enjoying accompanying activities.

After you’re done frolicking with butterflies, make sure to wander through the Origami in the Garden art exhibit. Large steel, bronze, and aluminum origami-inspired sculptures bring the garden to life and will take your breath away. They were lovingly designed and created through a collaboration between Sante Fe artists Kevin and Jennifer Box and origami pros Robert J. Lang, Te Jui Fu, Michael G. LaFosse, and Richard L. Alexander.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

3. Enjoy the simple pleasure of dining outside

Having a nice meal with your family can be wonderful anytime—but it is particularly enjoyable when you’re sitting outside, people watching and enjoying the warm air and summer breeze. Before things get too brisk for dining al fresco, book a patio table at Casa del Barco.

Not only is their take on traditional Mexican cuisine delicious, the adults in your group can indulge in a cocktail with one of their 100 varieties of agave-based spirits. While the salsa flight and taco party platter will be a hit with your crowd, we recommend also exploring some of their classic dishes like honey habanero moonshine shrimp or beef barbacoa enchiladas.

4. Forget your “beach body” and indulge in a sweet treat

After dinner, it’s time for dessert! And with summer winding down, you deserve to indulge a little. The kids (and adults) will love a trip to Charm School Social Club, a local ice cream shop with homemade treats made with fresh, quality ingredients. Their innovative flavors change seasonally, including a variety of vegan offerings—and you can get your hand-rolled cone topped with their signature toasted fluff.

If you’re ice-creamed out for the season, head over to Sub Rosa Bakery for a wood-fired pastry and cappuccino. You can’t go wrong with the chocolate almond croissant or sour cherry and pistachio pastry, but your kiddos may prefer sticking with their more traditional options like cinnamon rolls and fruit tarts. They also serve a number of savory options, so you can make a full meal of it. Their offerings change frequently, so we won’t blame you for making multiple trips!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, Richmond!
