Considering Plastic Surgery Before Your Wedding Day? Follow This Timeline.

Are you planning on getting married in Virginia this year? If you’ve thought about seeing a plastic surgeon in Richmond before your big day, you’re not alone. Everyone wants to look their best on one of the most important days of their lives, in one of the most beautiful dresses they have ever worn—and an experienced plastic surgeon can help you get just the look you want.

Knowing when to have your desired procedure to ensure your new look is at its best by your wedding day can be a little tricky. If you aren’t sure where to begin, I am here to help. I have the pleasure of working with many brides-to-be every year in Richmond, helping them plan their cosmetic enhancements for an optimal recovery and beautiful results on their big day. Below, I’ve shared some general guidelines I give these patients to plan their pre-wedding plastic surgery timeline.

For surgical procedures, it’s best to allow 12 months between surgery day and wedding day.

If you are considering a surgical cosmetic procedure, such as breast augmentation, liposuction, or rhinoplasty, I recommend planning to have surgery at least 12 months before your wedding day. Doing so will allow adequate time to recover, for the majority of swelling to resolve, and for scarring to improve. You may want to keep this in mind when purchasing and fitting for your wedding dress—for example, your dress will fit very differently 6 months after breast augmentation than it will just 1 month afterwards; body contouring procedures will have a similar effect. Allowing extra time for scars to fade can help you feel more confident still, especially if your honeymoon plans will involve donning a bikini!

Moreover, completing your procedure well before your big day will allow you to concentrate on planning your wedding—not recovering from surgery—during the months before your wedding day. Don’t forget to allot extra time to research your procedure and consult with plastic surgeons; this can add another few months to the process, depending on how quickly you choose a plastic surgeon and are able to confirm a surgery date.

Non-surgical options offer a quick turn-around with long-lasting results

If your wedding is only a few months away at this point, don’t worry! There is still a lot you can do to refine your appearance and look radiant as you walk down the aisle.

If you are interested in improving your neck contour, Kybella® injections can be a great option to reduce excess fat underneath the chin (a.k.a. a “double chin”) and achieve a more refined neckline. A dose of Kybella is typically injected into the neck fat pad area every 4-6 weeks, and most patients choose to have 2 to 3 doses, depending on what we determine from a neck and skin exam during your consultation. Because results appear gradually with Kybella, and there is associated swelling after each dose, you may want to schedule this in-office procedure with me beginning about 5 to 6 months before your big day. After that, the results of Kybella will last as long as you maintain your weight.

If reducing facial wrinkles or creases is on your to-do list, injectables treatments such as BOTOX® and fillers can offer near-immediate results that last for many months (BOTOX® typically lasts 3 to 4 months, while fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane® typically last approximately 6 months). I recommend scheduling treatments about 2 to 3 months before your wedding day, both to ensure that all post-treatment bruising and swelling is gone and to allow for any touch-ups you may desire to perfect your look. If you have never tried injectable facial rejuvenation products, consider having your first treatment even further out from your wedding day to be sure that you love the results.

It’s never too late to get radiant skin for your wedding day

Smooth, flawless skin that looks great in wedding photos is a common goal for brides and grooms to be. While achieving healthy, youthful skin requires a long-term commitment to a quality daily skin care routine, we offer several excellent in-office treatments that can help improve texture, reduce blemishes, and achieve a gorgeous glow in just a few weeks. If you are interested in having great skin, please let me know so that I can recommend one of our great aestheticians for a medical-grade facial or peel to address fine lines and age spots and to boost overall skin health.
